Inspired by a post I made on Adaptation-
His accented words were not of particular interest to her as Lullaby watched a butterfly flutter past, its bright blue wings paled even the sky above them, when Eradus had finished his address the mare turned and walked away, lashing her ebony tail, showing her nervousness when she saw the amber magma that was still to cool, she snorted and began a route around it, not wanting to burn even the smallest hair upon her body. She continued her stroll; the herd’s debates were of little concern to her, she sighed and focused on the cool rock beneath her hooves, hearing a soft chink with each step she took almost as if her hooves were burdened with the heavy irons of carthorses and that of any enslaved by man.
The second thing she registered during her walk was an unnatural dryness to her tongue, with each stride she noticed it became more apparent, more obvious, it clouded her mind like a fog, hogging her senses until there was nothing in her world but the thirst. Lullaby ran her tongue over her lips slightly, confirming her thoughts, with a toss of her head she began to head towards the meadow Eradus had shown her and she lowered her head to the small silver serpent that was the brook, she sucked at the water, feeling its coolness against her parched mouth almost as if it were a godsend, she eagerly drank her fill before walking a little away, munching at a few blades of the sweet summer grass, the blue roan mare surveyed the land, once again alone she lowered her head to the floor and snorted, her warm breath tickling the blades of greenery before she laid down, her ivory underside was cooled by the earth, somehow untainted by the blistering rays of the summers sun.
Since arriving Lullaby had been so carefree, playful and bubbly, but now she was alone she could be her true self, her face was a blank mask, the energy she had forced was now gone as she remained in the long grass, she tossed her ebony forelock from her face with a sigh and returned the gaze of her amber-brown eyes to the many shades of green beneath her nose, she drew her ebony-tipped legs closer to herself, ever since arriving she hadn’t had a true friend, Eradus was friendly and all but Lullaby had a feeling he wouldn’t understand the real her, to him she was a child, a filly that enjoys pointless play . She heaved out yet another sigh, longing for the companionship of another, even the playful attentions of a foal will do, she snorted softly as the same bright blue butterfly from before flapped over her head, landing on her pinkened muzzle, The mare was mesmerised by the beautiful patterns on its wings.
For a moment it seemed to hang in the air after the mare once again snorted, before fluttering away peacefully, heading ever deeper into the meadows. Lullaby was once again alone, she just hoped it wouldn’t be for long.
